### Sequoia Capital — Writing a Business Plan

**Key insight:** The "Why Now?" slide is the most overlooked and most important. Every great company has a "why now" that explains why this couldn't have been built 5 years ago.

**Sequoia's required elements:**
1. Company purpose — one declarative sentence
2. Problem — describe the pain, whose pain it is
3. Solution — your approach and why it's superior
4. Why Now — recent changes that enable this
5. Market size — TAM, bottom-up
6. Competition — your advantages vs alternatives
7. Product — demo or screenshots
8. Business model — how you charge, unit economics
9. Team — founders + key hires
10. Financials — revenue, projections (if applicable)

### Y Combinator — How to Pitch Your Startup
**Source:** YC application questions, Demo Day format
**Key insight:** Simplicity wins. The best pitches are one sentence. "Airbnb: book rooms with locals." If you can't say it simply, you don't understand it yet.

**YC rules:**
- Lead with what you do, not the market
- Traction is queen — if you have numbers, lead with them
- Skip the grand vision until you've earned it with traction
- Show you talk to users (user quotes, retention data)
- The ask should be specific ("$500K to get to 1K DAU")

### Guy Kawasaki — The 10/20/30 Rule

## Tier 2: Crypto-Specific Pitch Wisdom

### a16z Crypto — What We Look For
**Key patterns from a16z crypto investments:**
- **Protocol-market fit** > product-market fit. Is the protocol useful without any single frontend?
- **Composability** is the moat. Can other builders compose on top of your protocol?
- **Community as distribution**. Crypto projects with strong developer/user communities outperform.
- **Token design matters**. Utility must justify existence. Governance-only tokens are weak.
- **Regulatory awareness**. Post-2024, VCs want to know your regulatory posture.

### Multicoin Capital — Crypto Thesis Framework
**Key framework:**
- What is the **value capture mechanism**? Where does revenue come from?
- What is the **network effect**? Does each new user make it better for existing users?
- What is the **switching cost**? Why won't users leave for a fork?
- What is the **defensibility timeline**? How long until a competitor catches up?

### Solana-Specific Pitch Patterns (from Colosseum winners)
**What hackathon judges and Solana VCs reward:**
- **Speed as a feature.** If your product doesn't leverage Solana's <400ms finality, why are you on Solana?
- **On-chain metrics.** Judges verify claims by checking on-chain. Link to Explorer.
- **Compressed NFTs / state compression.** Shows deep Solana knowledge.
- **Mobile-first.** Solana Mobile is a differentiator. If your UX works on Saga, say so.
- **Real users, not vanity metrics.** DAU > total wallets. Retention > signups. Revenue > TVL.

## Tier 3: Slide-by-Slide Best Practices

### Problem Slide — Make Them Feel It

- Don't just state the problem — name the **enemy** (a force, not a person)
- Show the **cost of inaction** — what happens if they don't solve this
- Use a real user quote if you have one
- The problem should be **undeniably real** — if the audience doesn't nod, you've lost them

**Anti-patterns:**
- "Many people struggle with..." (vague, no specificity)
- Stating a problem the audience doesn't experience
- Spending too long on the problem (3 bullet points, max)

### Traction Slide — The Credibility Engine

**Pre-seed benchmarks (crypto, 2025-2026):**
- Proof of concept deployed to devnet/testnet
- 50-500 beta users or waitlist signups
- 2-3 design partners or pilot agreements
- Team has relevant prior exit or deep domain expertise

**Seed benchmarks:**
- 500-5K monthly active users (or equivalent on-chain activity)
- $10K-$100K monthly on-chain volume
- 15%+ week-over-week growth for 6+ weeks
- Evidence of retention (D7 > 20%, D30 > 10%)

**Series A benchmarks:**
- 10K-100K MAU
- $100K+ monthly revenue (or equivalent protocol fees)
- Clear path to $1M ARR
- Strong retention curve (D30 > 15%)
- Unit economics positive or clear path

### Market Slide — Bottom-Up Only

- **Never start with a top-down number.** "Crypto is $2T" tells VCs nothing.
- **Bottom-up formula:** (# of potential customers) × (revenue per customer) × (realistic capture rate)
- **Show your math.** "500K Solana developers × $20/mo tool subscription × 5% conversion = $6M ARR addressable in year 1"
- **SAM is more important than TAM.** What can you actually reach with your current product and distribution?

### Competition Slide — Honesty Wins

- **Never say "no competition."** It means either no market or no self-awareness.
- **Include indirect competition.** Spreadsheets, manual processes, and "doing nothing" are competitors.
- **The highlighted row** in your comparison table must be something only you do.
- **Be honest about competitor strengths.** Saying "we're better at everything" destroys credibility.

### Ask Slide — Be Specific

- **Specific amount:** "$500K" not "raising a round"
- **Specific instrument:** "SAFE at $5M cap" or "15% equity"
- **Specific use:** "2 engineers ($300K) + 6 months runway ($200K)"
- **Specific milestone:** "to reach 1K DAU and $50K MRR"
- **Specific timeline:** "18-month runway to Series A"

### Phantom ($1.2B valuation, 2022)
**What worked:**
- Led with user growth (3M+ users at time of raise)
- Showed Solana ecosystem dependency (not a "blockchain wallet" — a "Solana wallet")
- Demo was the product — showed the wallet experience
- Simple ask: "dominant wallet on the fastest-growing chain"

**Pattern:** Lead with undeniable traction → show ecosystem dependency → demo the UX

### Uniswap ($11M Series A, a16z, 2020)
**What worked:**
- Led with on-chain volume ($1B+ total volume at time)
- Never pitched "decentralized exchange" — pitched "automated market making"
- Showed composability (other protocols building on Uniswap)
- Simple token utility: governance + fee switch

**Pattern:** On-chain metrics that speak for themselves → composability as moat → simple tokenomics

### Jupiter ($3B+ FDV at TGE, 2024)
**What worked:**
- Largest DEX aggregator on Solana by volume
- Community-first distribution (massive airdrop)
- Product spoke for itself (swap aggregation, limit orders, DCA)
- Team shipped consistently for 2+ years before token

**Pattern:** Build first, token later → community distribution → product excellence

## The 10-Slide Litmus Test

Before presenting, your deck must pass these 10 questions. If you can't answer any of them clearly from your slides, the deck has a gap:

1. **What do you do?** (Title slide — one sentence)
2. **What problem do you solve?** (Problem slide — specific pain, with evidence)
3. **Why now?** (Why Now slide — what changed)
4. **How do you solve it?** (Solution slide — 3 features max)
5. **Does it work?** (Demo slide — real screenshot or live)
6. **Why crypto?** (Why Crypto slide — remove blockchain, does product still work?)
7. **Is anyone using it?** (Traction slide — real numbers)
8. **How big can it get?** (Market slide — bottom-up math)
9. **Who's building it?** (Team slide — relevant credentials)
10. **What do you need?** (Ask slide — specific amount, use, milestone)

If any answer is "we'll figure it out" — that slide needs work.

1. **Grand Champions are infrastructure/protocol plays** — not consumer apps. Storage, consensus, dev tools, DeFi primitives.
2. **Novel primitives win** — ephemeral NFTs, hedge-backed stablecoins, proof-of-work on Solana. Genuine innovation over incremental improvement.
3. **Developer tooling punches above its weight** — Seer, Txtx, Wysdom all placed highly despite smaller TAM.
4. **Real-world bridges matter** — DePIN winners (SvachSakthi, Shaga, Blockmesh) connect Solana to physical infrastructure.
5. **Working demos are non-negotiable** — judging criteria explicitly includes "functionality."
6. **Speed as a feature** — if your product doesn't leverage Solana's <400ms finality, why Solana?

## Design Rules from Non-AI-Looking Decks

The best decks in the world DON'T look like AI templates:

1. **Flat colors, not gradients** — Navy background, white text, one accent
2. **One accent color** — Not three. Not rainbow.
3. **Typography hierarchy** — Big numbers, bold headlines create visual interest (not color tricks)
4. **Generous whitespace** — The opposite of "fill every pixel"
5. **Sans-serif fonts** — Inter, Geist, SF Pro, IBM Plex Sans
6. **2-3 colors max** per slide plus neutrals
7. **No purple** — It screams "AI template" in 2025-2026
8. **No abstract blob illustrations** — Use real product screenshots or clean diagrams
9. **Large bold numbers** — Your traction metrics ARE the visual design
